For a standard domestic driveway expecting only car traffic, a well-compacted Type 1 MOT sub-base of around 150mm is typically sufficient. However, if you know your driveway will need to accommodate heavier vehicles on a regular basis, this specification needs to increase significantly.
For driveways expecting occasional heavy vehicle access, we'd typically recommend:
- A minimum 200 to 300mm compacted Type 1 sub-base, laid and compacted in layers
- A stronger bedding layer, potentially using a bound mortar mix rather than loose sand for slab or flag installations
- Reinforced concrete foundations where the heaviest loads are anticipated
- Proper geotextile membrane to prevent sub-base materials migrating into softer subsoil

Which Driveway Materials Handle Heavy Loads Best?
Not all driveway surfaces respond equally to heavy vehicle traffic. Here's how the most popular options compare:
Concrete
A well-laid concrete driveway is one of the strongest options available. When poured at the correct thickness (typically 100 to 150mm for domestic use) with steel mesh reinforcement, concrete can handle substantial loads. For driveways expecting regular heavy traffic, increasing the thickness to 150 to 200mm with heavier gauge reinforcement mesh provides excellent resilience. Concrete distributes weight across a broader area, which reduces point-load stress on the sub-base.
Block Paving
Block paving is surprisingly strong when installed correctly. Individual blocks are rated to withstand significant compressive forces, and the interlocking pattern distributes loads effectively. The key vulnerability is the jointing sand between blocks. Heavy vehicles can displace sand through vibration and hydraulic pressure, causing blocks to shift. Using a polymeric jointing compound rather than kiln-dried sand offers much better resistance to this.
Porcelain Paving
Porcelain slabs are incredibly hard and scratch-resistant, but they can be more brittle under point loads compared to concrete or natural stone. For areas expecting heavy vehicles, porcelain should be laid on a full mortar bed rather than spot-and-dot adhesive, ensuring the entire underside of each slab is fully supported. This eliminates voids that could cause cracking under concentrated weight.
Practical Steps to Protect Your Existing Driveway
If your driveway is already laid and you're concerned about occasional heavy vehicle visits, there are several practical measures you can take:
- Use load-spreading boards. When a skip lorry or crane visits, ask the driver to place thick steel plates or heavy-duty plywood boards under the stabiliser legs and along the track path. Most reputable operators carry these as standard.
- Direct vehicles carefully. Guide heavy vehicles to use the strongest part of your driveway, typically the centre rather than the edges, where support is usually greatest.
- Avoid prolonged static loading. A heavy vehicle parked in one spot for days creates far more damage than one driving slowly across. If a removals lorry needs to park up, try to position it on the road rather than directly on your driveway.
- Protect your edges. Driveway edges are the most vulnerable point. If heavy vehicles need to cross your boundary, consider having a reinforced dropped kerb installed to BS specification. We see plenty of crumbled edges across St Helens and Greater Manchester where standard edging simply wasn't designed for the load.
- Check your driveway after heavy vehicle visits. Walk the surface carefully, looking for any new movement in blocks, hairline cracks in concrete, or areas that feel soft underfoot. Early detection means simpler, less costly repairs.
Planning Ahead: Getting It Right from the Start
If you're planning a new driveway and you know heavy vehicles will need access, whether that's a regular delivery vehicle, a caravan, or a motorhome, the time to address this is at the design stage, not after the surface is laid.
A good installer will ask you about the types of vehicles you expect to use the driveway. This isn't just about the surface material. It influences the sub-base depth, the edging specification, the drainage design, and even the overall layout. A driveway designed to accommodate a 3.5-tonne motorhome will have a different specification to one built purely for a family hatchback.
It's also worth considering the access route to your property. This places additional stress on corners and edges that a professional installer will account for in the design.
When to Call in a Professional

A few shifted blocks can be lifted, re-bedded, and re-jointed relatively easily.
