Imprinted concrete vs block paving: which is right for your home?

It's the single most common question we get asked on a first site visit: "should we go imprinted concrete or block paving?" Both are brilliant surfaces when done properly, and both have clear strengths. Here's the honest, 25-years-of-installing-both comparison.

Quick comparison at a glance

If you only read one section of this post, read this:

  • Imprinted concrete — a single structural slab, stamped with patterns. No joints, no blocks, no weeds. Cheaper over the long term. 25-30 year lifespan.
  • Block paving — individual concrete or clay blocks laid on sand over a sub-base. Classic look, can be repaired block-by-block. Needs more maintenance. 20-25 year lifespan.

Imprinted concrete: the modern choice

Pros

  • No weeds — a single surface with no joints for anything to grow through
  • No sinking blocks — it's a structural slab, nothing to move independently
  • Low maintenance — a reseal every 3-5 years, occasional rinse
  • 35+ patterns, 25+ colours — can replicate stone, brick, slate at a fraction of the real-material cost
  • Quicker to install — typically 5-10 days for a standard driveway

Cons

  • Can crack — if the sub-base moves or control joints aren't properly placed (why correct installation matters)
  • Harder to repair invisibly — you can patch and re-seal, but perfect invisible repairs are tricky
  • Needs resealing — every 3-5 years to maintain UV protection and water-resistance

Block paving: the traditional choice

Pros

  • Repairable — any damaged block can be lifted and replaced individually
  • Classic aesthetic — the look is genuinely traditional and always in fashion
  • Flexible — blocks move slightly with ground shifts without fracturing
  • Wide range of block types — concrete, clay, permeable, tumbled, riven

Cons

  • Weeds — joints need regular sanding, and weeds will still get through eventually
  • Sinking and movement — individual blocks can sink if the sub-base isn't perfect, especially at edges and under wheel paths
  • More ongoing maintenance — jet-washing, re-sanding joints, the occasional block replacement
  • Slightly longer install — typically 7-14 days for a standard driveway

Which should you choose?

Imprinted concrete is usually better if…

  • You want low maintenance and don't want to jet-wash every year
  • You have weeds or moss problems on your existing surface
  • You want a specific stone, brick or cobble look without the cost
  • You've got a reasonably large area (it's more cost-effective at scale)
  • You hate the idea of individual blocks sinking

Block paving is usually better if…

  • You live somewhere with ground movement or tree root issues (blocks flex, concrete cracks)
  • You like the classic block look specifically
  • You want the option to make invisible repairs later
  • You're on a smaller area where the per-m² installation cost is similar
  • You don't mind a bit of regular maintenance

Real-world maintenance comparison

Over a 20-year lifespan, here's roughly what each surface needs:

Imprinted concrete:

  • Year 3-5: first reseal (~£250-500)
  • Year 8-10: second reseal
  • Year 13-15: third reseal
  • Year 18-20: possible repairs + final reseal

Block paving:

  • Yearly: jet-wash, re-sand joints (~£50-200 DIY, £150-400 pro)
  • Year 5: professional clean + re-sand
  • Year 8-12: possible block replacements, edge repair
  • Year 15-18: partial lift-and-relay of worst areas

Over 20 years, total maintenance cost on block paving is typically 2-3× that of imprinted concrete.

The verdict

Both surfaces done properly will look excellent and last decades. The question isn't which is "better" — it's which fits your property, your maintenance appetite, and your budget.

If you want minimal fuss for 25 years, go imprinted. If you want the classic block look and don't mind weekend jet-washing, go block paving. Either way, the install quality matters more than the material.
